       A Limerick about Polar Bears

A polar bear doesn't like to eat honey,

He eats fish but doesn't use any money,

He plays out in the snow,

              Although how I don’t know,

Their babies are cute and their funny.

Life Cycle of Polar Bears

My animal life cycle is on the Polar Bear. I chose this animal because I very much like polar bears. They baby polar bears are very cute, it can catch fish and eat them. The polar bear's Latin name is Ursus Maritimus, whcih means 'sea bear' an apt name for this amazing species which spends much of its life in, around, or on the water - predominately on the sea ice. The eskimos call it "Nanook", which means "ever-wandering one". The family of polar bear is mammal and the largest of the bear family.

These majestic animals come from the far north, the polar region but the polar bear is not cold. Polar bears live in a very cold climate, and spend most of their time in, around, or on the water, mostly on sea ice. The polar bears country of origin is Canada, any that live outside of Canada live in the Arctic. Polar bears can be found in five countries: Canada, Norway, Greenland, Russia and Alaska.

The polar bear is the biggest terrestrial carnivore on the planet, males range from 350 to 544 kilograms, where as females range from 150 to 300 kilograms, babies when they are born weigh less than 2 kilos but reach about 13 kilos by the time they are 3 months old.

A polar bear's life cycle starts when two adults mate every other year in mid-summer. Ringed seals are the polar bear's primary food source--but a beached whale means a feast! Polar bears usually do not live past the age of 25 in the wild with the oldest known wild polar bear dying at 32 years old. The polar bear's native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. Since Polar Bears find themselves at the very top of the food chain, the only predators they have are each other. They have been known to kill off younger/smaller bears to cut out on competition.  In the wild, polar bears live an average 15 to 18 years. The polar bear's survival is linked to the arctic sea ice, a habitat greatly affected by climate change.   Polar bears are an apex predator who really only need to defend themselves against other bears and humans.

Polar bears are found in very cold parts of the world where tempreatures can drop as low as -29 degrees celsious. Most of the polar bear's energy comes from the consumption of seal meat. Expecting females will increase their body weigh by up to 200 kilos before hibernation and the delivery of their offspring (which happens whilst mother is sleeping). Polar bear numbers are estimated at 20,000 to 25,000 with 60% of those living in Canada. During hiberation bears will dig big dens in the snow and remain there for coldest winter months. It is important to know, only the pregnant females hibernate. One of the main differences between polar bears and other forms of bears, besides they fact that they live in the extreme cold, is they are almost completely carnivorous, where as most other bears ore omnivors or mostly herbivors.
