ELA - English Language Arts
In English Language Arts students are exposed to and work with all facets of the English language as they work through the curriculum. Through the course of this science based Inquiry Project on the Life Cycles of animals, students were exposed to and taught how to write a variety of poems using their animals as inspiration and the main character of their work. They needed to research their animal which meant honing their searching skills by figering out key words to gain information quicker.
Through ELA, students had to:

Expand their vocabulary in order to comprehend, for many, what is new text and using different forms of language around a very familiar theme, animals.

Generate ideas by experimenting with ways of generating ideas prior to creating oral, print and other media texts'

Develop thier creative writing skills (writing non-fictional stories about their animals)

learn how to count syllables for consistancey in poetry rhythms

learn how to use homophones, that is rhyme words that sound the same but don't look the same (example, fox and socks)

learn how to use suffixes to increase rhyming frequency (example, swimming and singing)

learn that different forms of poetry have different functions and different formats (example, lymericks have five lines and are generally humorous).

learn how to write collaboratively in a new form of writing (the writing of signets was a collective task)

learn how to develop and write an informative self introduction of themselves using set questions and adding to those from their own cultural interests

learn sequencing words to assist in organising thoughts and events (first, then, afterwards et cetera)

improve their 'record, evaluate and organizational skills'

explain understanding of new concepts in your own words
