        A Limerick about Chickens

The animal I chose is a chicken,

            At KFC its finger lickin’

            The chicken was yucky,

            Skin slimy and mucky,

So I ate a falafel and not chicken.

I chose to research chickens. Chickens in Arabic we say dajaj, in Chinese they are called ji, In southern America Chickens are known as yardbirds, apart from that, I do not know if they are called by any other name.  Originally chickens were called fowls, the name chicken is derived from the babies chickens or chicks, later the name chicken stuck. A male chicken is called roster or cock depending on the country, and the female chickens are called hens. Chickens are said to have originated from China, Thailand, Burma and India.

"Gallus gallus domesticus" is the chicken’s Latin name, and "Chooks" is the chicken’s colloquial name. They are also known as Red Junglefowl. Chickens belong to the bird family; there are more chickens in the world than any other bird. In 2003 there was a recorded 24 billion chickens in the world. I chose to research chickens because I thought chickens would be an easy animal to research, also I like chickens, they are funny little animals. Chickens can be found in most countries in the world. Chickens cannot fly, they look like a fat bird, they lay eggs every day, a chicken clucks, a duck quacks. That is why it is not a duck. They have hollow bones, feathers, and short wings. The roster is more colourful than the hen, with a crest on his head and large plums of tail feathers.

The first cycle is an egg, the second cycle is a chick, the third cycle is an adult hen or roster. Some of the varieties of chickens include: A buff brahma, white leghorn, derby red cap, Dominique, silver campine, white –lace red Cornish, new Hampshire red. In total there are more than 140 varieties of chickens accross the world. ?Chickens live from 8-10 years, the oldest chicken in history, in the Guiness Book of Records, lived to 16 years.

Dogs, eagles, red foxs, weasels, lice, snakes, bears, skunks, fisher cats, squirrels, poultry ticks, raccoons, hawks, coyotes, minks, mites, possums, cats, bobcats, owls, mountain lions and crows, are just some of the predators they prey on chickens. Feather picking & cannibalism can also cause deaths in groups of chickens from their own. Chickens are constantly under threat from preditors, they worry about animals trying to eat them.

When the chicken is small they are yellow when the chicken grows up the chicken well change colours to represent which breed they belong to. A Chickens when threatened will make a lot of noise in the hope that they animal will then leave as their have lost the element of surprise. Baby chickens eat oatmeal in most cases, rice, wheat barley, adult chickens eat hamburgers, pizza and other western food.

The chicken does not have poison, rosters however can be very aggressive and originally were breed to fight with other rosters. The chickens main line of self defence is to ban together to make loud noises to scare away would be killers.

Some varieties of  chickens are:  Dorking are from Italy, Cornish are from Cornwall , Appenzell are from Switzerland jersey Giant is from USA, Silkies are from China, Wyandotte is from USA and Sultans is from Turkey. There are also some smaller varieties known as bantum chickens. Silkie Chickens have black flesh and black bones, the come from Asia, mainly China, the flesh still tastes the same as a regular chicken despite the colour difference. A a chicken can grow up the size of a football maybe bigger.  A pullet is a young hen, especially one less than a year old.’ bantam’ chickens are about half the size of most regular sized chickens.
